Abstract

The critical behaviour near the commensurate-incommensurate transition of a two-dimensional elastic lattice on a one-dimensionally modulated substrate is studied by a novel renormalisation group approach which includes the mismatch between lattice structure and substrate as a renormalisable parameter. The critical exponent nu is found to depend continuously on the model parameters. For typical experimental values of the latter, nu is close to 1/3, which is in good agreement with experiments on adsorbed monolayers.
