Abstract

Abstract We studied parameter dependence of emittance growth due to space charge effects in a low energy proton synchrotron. The Low Energy Booster (LEB) of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) was examined as a test lattice and semi self consistent multi-particle tracking was performed. Beam intensity, initial emittance, injection energy, and lattice superperiodicity were taken as parameters and asymptotic emittance was calculated. The brightness limit is found, which is independent of beam intensity and initial emittance once injection energy is fixed.
