Abstract

The paramagnetic resonance was observed of approximately 1% Yb/sup 3+/ in crystals of Y/sub 3/Ga/sub 5/O/sub 12/. The results are of interest in connection with the magnetic properties of Yb/sub 3/Ga/sub 5/O/sub 12/, Yb/sub 3/ Fe/sub 5/L/sub 12/, and the effects of rar e earth impurities in Y/sub 3/Fe/sub 5/ O/sub 12/. The crystals were grown from a PbO flux using the method of Nielsen and were oriented by optical and x-ray methods. Measurements were made at 9 gigacycles per second, using a standard video spectrometer, at temperatures of 4 deg , 20 deg , and 90 deg K. When a magnetic field was applied in a general direction relative to the crystal axes six main lines were clearly resolved, together with a large number of smaller lines which were later identified curves calculated from g values reveals a variation of resonance field with angle in a (1 1 0) plane at 9.677 gigacycles per second.
