Abstract
A pronounced broadening of the lines and a decrease in the hyperfine tensor components of the EPR spectrum of vanadyl acetylacetonate (VAA) doped into the crystalline phase of the nematic liquid crystal p-methoxybenzlidene amino phenyl acetate is observed as the temperature of the solid approaches the transition temperature to the liquid crystal phase from below. The effects are indicative of the onset of a thermally activated fluctuation of the VAA complex resulting from pretransitional fluctuations of the liquid crystal molecules in the solid prior to melting.
