Abstract

Proton longitudinal relaxation data forcis-chloroacrylic acid in solution are reported. Experiments involving the two olefinic protons constituting an isolated AX spin system have been performed. The relaxation matrices for the two spins with and without the addition of Ni2+have been obtained by two-dimensional exchange spectroscopy together with transfer-mode analysis. The multiplet asymmetries in the relaxation for the diamagnetic sample are interpreted as interference effects between dipole–dipole and chemical-shift anisotropy interactions. The signs and magnitudes of the terms corresponding to the two different protons are different, a fact which can be attributed to differences in the shielding tensors for the two protons. For one of the protons, there is a measurable difference in the cross-correlation term when adding NiCl2. This effect is due to cross correlation between nuclear dipole–dipole interaction and paramagnetic Curie spin relaxation.
