Abstract

Results of measurements of the paramagnetic and AC susceptibility of the pseudobinary compounds Gd(Al 1- x M x ) 2 for M=Pb, Si and Ge are presented. A dramatic decrease of the Curie temperature T C and the paramagnetic Curie temperature θ p versus concentration x was observed to earlier results for M=Cu, Ag, Pd, In and Sn. The effective magnetic moment μ eff does not change too much for M=Ge, but in case of Si and Pb increases about 0.3–0.5μ B. These effects are mostly connected with changes in the density of states at the Fermi level as a result of replacement of Al atoms by other nonmagnetic elements M within the same crystal structure.
