Abstract

Ian is a 28-year-old international wheelchair rugby player with a spinal cord injury at the level of sixth cervical vertebrae. He has no feeling in his legs, limited use of the trunk and good, but not full control of his shoulders, arms, and hands. Wheelchair rugby is a fast-paced, full-contact team sport featured at the Paralympic Games since Atlanta 1996. Currently, the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation (IWRF) allows people with other disabilities to participate as well. In wheelchair rugby, eligible athletes are classified according to their functional abilities based on a point value ranking from 0.5 to 3.5. Despite how extensive the IWRF’s Classification Manual is, some athletes are difficult to classify. Ian was happy with his first classification and kept working hard on his individual development.
