Abstract

Synopsis Examples of institutions are given, and definitions of racism, sexism and institutional racism and sexism are provided. Research and theoretical literature are cited in order to illustrate that many parallels, or similarities, exist in regards to discrimination against females and minorities, especially Black Americans, in the United States. Also cited is literature which indicates that, despite the parallels, there are substantial differences, or particularities, in practices or conditions related to racism and sexism, American style. Problems facing minorities and women in the fight to eliminate racism and sexism are highlighted, and research is given to support an opinion that the power structure maintained by Caucasian males is the basic barrier to racial and sexual equality. Ten possible solutions are offered to minorities and/or women for solving problems resulting from institutional racism and sexism as well as from general societal-economic conditions. The solutions require individual and organizational levels of action.
