Abstract

A parallel plate halogen counter is presented which can be used for beta and gamma radiation measurements up to 1000 r/h or more. The counter has high internal amplification resulting in high current up to 100 μa, depending on the working voltage. It was observed that for this counter the recovery time is equal to the dead time. A simple relation between the average output current and radiation intensity is given. The method of filling the counter with bromine and neon resulting in reliable and reproducible properties is described.
