Abstract

This paper considers the classification of parallel operation of voltage source inverters in the context of multilevel inverter systems. The similarity between the unfiltered outputs of multistage inverters, diode-clamped inverters and flying-capacitor inverters on the one hand and the unfiltered output of the parallel inverters scheme proposed in this paper on the other hand is discussed. It is proposed that one may use multilevel inverters as a backdrop in which to discuss the parallel operation of voltage source inverters. By unifying the areas of research for parallel operated and multilevel inverters, it is suggested that the parallel scheme may be employed more in the near future.
