Abstract

Stability of free convection flow is examined in a horizontal cavity, insulated on the sides and heated from the bottom by a constant uniform heat flux. Base flow solutions are derived under the parallel flow assumption, for which linear stability analysis reveals a Hopf type bifurcation at the critical Rayleigh number, indicating oscillating thermal instability modes over the entire range of Prandtl numbers considered
