Abstract

Parallel error correction is discussed for highly parallel and/or high speed serial optical memory and communication systems. Spectral Reed-Solomon decoders based on the Berlekamp Algorithm offer efficient parallel implementations. Parallel spectral decoders are compared with conventional serial decoders in terms of VLSI area, electrical power dissipation and maximum aggregate information rate. Design details of a (15,9) parallel spectral Reed-Solomon decoder are presented along with simulation and test results.
