Abstract

Two sections of the Babino Formation (Iskur Carbonate Group) situated in the Iskur Gorge were studied – one to the north of the Lakatnik railway station and the other to the northwest of the hamlet Sfrazhen of the Milanovo village. Two brachiopod associations were found and described for the first time. The first one indicates the Coenothyris aulis, Taxonrange Zone and the other - the Schwagerispira sp. - Dinarispira avariea Assemblage Zone. Ammonoid and bivalve assemblages are poorer, and indicate respectively the ammonoid zone Baiatonites baiatonicus and the bivalve zone Lima striata. Although the microfauna represented by conodonts and foraminifers does not show big diversity, it is sufficiently significant for determining the age of the rocks. The Paragondoiella bulgariea conodont Zone is determined and the presence of the Pridaella bifurcata Zone is hinted. Foraminifer association proves the Pilammina densa Zone. Above this zone, Ychtyoiaria aff. phyloidea (Kr. -Tollman) and the algal species Baecanella floriformis Pantić appear. Analysis of the megafauna, microfauna and microflora, found in the Babino Formation, undoubtedly proves its stratigraphical position, and namely, middle parts of Pelsonian Substage - lower parts of IIIirian Substage of the Anisian Stage.
