Abstract

Paraldehyde was used as a preoperative sedative for tonsillectomy in children in 224 cases. Best results were obtained using i c.c. of paraldehyde for every 5 pounds of body weight, mixed with an equal volume of tap water as a retention enema. The results were highly gratifying, the method simple and safe, the cost insignificant. No untoward reactions were observed. A case of accidental administration of 60 c.c. of paraldehyde by rectum to a 9 year old child, with uneventful recovery, is reported.
