Abstract

After the stress of a drug reaction, a previously non-diabetic subject had a unique, paradoxical decrease in circulating insulin in response to intravenous glucose. This response disappeared during α-adrenergic blockade with phentolamine and could be reproduced by α stimulation with adrenaline. It was concluded that the α receptor, possibly stimulated by endogenous catecholamine release in response to glucose, played a role in this unusual example of abnormal insulin secretion.
