Abstract
Uses literary examples and case materials to illustrate themes of (1) the power of existential roots, (2) the avoidance of personal responsibility, (3) the denial of reality, (4) the terror of individuation, (5) the fear of intimacy, and (6) the quest for unmingled pleasure. Offers therapeutic strategies for dealing with each of these themes and in doing so draws especially on the theories of leading family therapists.
