Abstract

A paracentric inversion ( In(2R) l) in the right arm chromosome 2 of CULEX PIPIENS is described from salivary gland polytene chromosomes. The inversion is close to the centromere and involves about 18% of the length of the arm. Dicentric bridges and acentric chromosome fragments were found in preparations of testes. The relationship of inversions to sterility and to variation in recombination frequency is discussed.
