Abstract

Through the device of inserting a suitably designed simple lens or sphe~ica1 mirror near the center of curvature of a spherical mirror which is to be parabolized, the operation of parabolizing can be carried on conveniently without the use of the customary auxiliary flat. In nearly all cases sufficiently perfect parabolization results. In the exceptional case of the 200-inch mirror for the Mount Palomar Observa- tory, it is found impossible fully to correct in this way, necessitating the use of an auxiliary correcting plate in conjunction with lens or mirror
