Abstract

This paper explores one of St. Pierre Favre's strategies for dealing with concupiscence: when faced with the vestiges of the "old Adam," Favre invokes the Trinity. Concupiscence brings about an interior disorder that threatens Favre's spiritual life and the fruitfulness of his vows, especially his vow of chastity. As a remedy, this paper shows, Favre asks the Trinitarian persons (a) to order rightly the powers of his soul—memory, intellect, and will, and (b) to sanctify his whole person—body, soul, and spirit.
