Abstract
Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) arising from a thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) is very rare and affected patients appear to have a favorable prognosis. In this report we describe an uncommon series of PTC arising from TGDC affecting 4 Guatemalan female patients, aged 23-50 years (mean, 33 years). The patients presented with painless nodules in the region of the thyroglossal tract located in the middle anterior region of neck. Evolution times ranging from 1 to 3 years were reported for 2 patients. Microscopically, the lesions demonstrated classic PTC, showing pseudo-inclusions and nuclear overlaps associated with the cystic lining containing remnants of thyroid follicles in the capsule. All lesions were surgically removed, and the patients are in follow-up.
