Abstract
Abstract This article investigates how the established rules for optical construction, spatial harmony and added message value affect the computer icon. Symbols which have adapted and partly used these known factors for construction are explained in two case studies. Each uses phonetic alphabet components in the final design and each has been adjusted to give added message value. We explain the elements that have to function within the matrix and the methodology behind the construction of a symbol that uses letterform. A brief recent history to place the symbol into that context is considered through a corporate appearance programme.
