Abstract

In this paper, we outline the design and use of a reluctance technique for determining oil film thickness in diesel engine main bearings. We also present some experimental results obtained on a 4 stroke 4 cylinder 630 kW diesel engine. The sensors had to work at pressures up to 50 MPa and temperatures around 100 C. Oil film thickness sensors, pressure transducers and thermocouples were inserted in the shell bearing core. It was so possible to equip the engine with an instrumented bearing replacing an existing bearing.
