Abstract
After the first experience with low CTOD values in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of low carbon micro-alloyed steels about 10 years ago, SINTEF proposed a cost effective materials characterisation programme for the Norwegian Petroleum Dirtectorate (NPD). The aim of this NPD programme was to identify the microstructures most prone to brittleness and to rank the HAZ toughness of steel qualities in a quantitative way.
