Abstract

This volume contains all the published mathematical papers by the late Professor Pao-Lu Hsu. A volume of selected papers, including 19 items, six of which were in Chinese, was published by the Science Press in China in 1981. At the request of Beijing University, I took charge of the present, more complete compilation. My task was made easy by a previous list of Hsu's publications in the memorial article in the Annals 01 Statistics, Vol. 7, No. 3 (1979). The list has now been revised to contain 40 items instead of 37. Seven of the papers, Nos. 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 38, and 40 on the new list, have been translated from the Chinese by Messrs. Sun, Cheng, Hsu, and Shih, as indicated on the first page of each article. This project was financed by Beijing University and accomplished with the goodwill and generosity of these colleagues, and the splendid cooperation of the staff of Springer-Verlag, with the personal blessing of Dr. H. Gotze. These papers, as weIl as several others published after Hsu's return to China in 1947, are now available to international readers for the first time. In addition, Hsu's old friend, H. Robbins, contributed the hitherto unpublished portion of their joint paper No. 24; Hsu's colleagues Kiang and Tuan in Beijing rewrote their memorial tribute for this occasion.
