Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides an overview of empirically based treatment approaches to panic disorder, with a specific focus on the use of cognitive behavioral therapy. A detailed literature review focusing on the efficacy and effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy for panic disorder is provided. The advantages and disadvantages of combination treatments (i.e., cognitive behavioral therapy with psychiatric medications) are also considered. In addition, elements of typical cognitive behavioral therapy protocols are delineated to assist clinicians with a sample course of treatment for panic disorder. Finally, advances in cognitive behavioral therapy‐based treatments (i.e., transdiagnostic treatments, computer‐based treatments, adjuncts to cognitive behavioral therapy) for panic disorder are also discussed.
