Abstract

This section presents a brief scientific background on the Arctic. The information is presented in the form of remarks made by Barbara Moore at the Thirty-Third Annual Conference of the Center for Oceans Law and Policy (COLP) . Scientifically we have much to learn about the oceans and what lies beneath the surface. It has actually only been about 20 years with the modern tools and technologies that we have now that we have been able to look beneath the surface of the sea to see what is there. We have learned to expect surprises-exotic life forms based on sulphur and methane chemistries, earth quakes, submarine seamount-from our undersea research experience. Keywords: Arctic; COLP; scientific background
