Abstract

A panel of 20 individuals (five categories with four people in each) made independent aesthetic evaluations of the facial appearance of 64 subjects (32 of each sex) from the Burlington serial experimental group. The sample consisted of equal numbers, measured as having a vertical, an average or a horizontal mandibular growth direction from ages 6–20 years. The authors examined the intercorrelations between assessors, tested the consistency of evaluations between assessors, and found these to be acceptable. More disharmonious profiles were found, compared to the other samples, in the vertically growing males and females and the females with average growth direction. According to the assessments some aesthetic improvements occurred between 12 and 18 years for the girls.
