Abstract

1. Pancreatic function was evaluated in 25 patients with cirrhosis of the liver. 2. An abnormal secretin test, suggesting pancreatic disease, was found in 44% of the patients: Three patients had a low duodenal bicarbonate output and 10 patients showed a significant rise in serum diastase. 3. Random and serial serum diastase levels were frequently abnormal, usually in patients with an abnormal secretin test. 4. A markedly increased duodenal-volume response to secretin was observed in 48% of the patients. The origin and significance of this hypersecretion are discussed. 5. Steatorrhea was present in 57% of the patients. In only a few cases could it be attributed to pancreatic insufficiency.
