Abstract
The article is a short synthesis of the long history of wine used as a universal medicine from antiquity to the present day. The author, as a cultural anthropologist, does not focus on the problems and pathologies that are usually encountered in contemporary medical publications on alcohol. He shows the reasons why the dominant narratives about wine and other alcoholic beverages changed at the end of the 19th century, and expresses hope for the reconstruction of the proper proportions.
