Abstract

Pamela Rothwell Martelli, who made important contributions to many areas of atmospheric and space sciences research, died in Brighton, Sussex, U.K., on March 28, 1991, at the age of 64. Her intrepid spirit, vitality, and deep interest in science characterized a productive research career that spanned almost 4 decades of an exciting period in space research and upper atmospheric studies. During all this time, she snowed a keen interest in the research of her many colleagues, as well as in their families and their views of life in general. Her boundless generosity benefitted many young people just beginning their research careers. She introduced them to the foremost researchers in their fields and encouraged them to present their results at scientific meetings. Her view was that new ideas would come from the younger researchers and that it was important for them to move quickly into the mainstream of the research efforts.
