Abstract

Pamela Collins has always wanted to understand how the mind works and what drives behaviour. “As a student and later clinical trainee, I desperately wanted perspectives on mental health and illness beyond European-American frameworks”, she tells The Lancet Psychiatry. She gained some of those perspectives through her early research working with Black and Latina women with severe mental illness in New York City to understand HIV risk and avenues to prevention.
