Abstract

SUMMARY The precise age, Bajocian or Bathonian, of the Middle Jurassic Scalby Formation has proved controversial; a review of previous stratigraphical research on the Moor Grit Member and the overlying Long Nab Member is presented. Palynofloras from the uppermost Long Nab Member of Newtondale, North Yorkshire, indicate a Bathonian age. Two palynomorph assemblages from the lowermost Long Nab Member from coastal exposures north of Scarborough have been re-examined and are suggestive of a late Bajocian to Bathonian age.
