Abstract

An analysis of the palynomorphs and palynofacies as well as foraminifera and calcispheres from the transition between the Arnager Greensand Formation (middle Cenomanian) and the Arnager Limestone Formation (Coniacian) on Bornholm, has shown that (a) the deposition of greensand took place in an inner-shelf environment, (b) a rise in sea level during the late Cenomanian-early Coniacian caused an interruption in deposition leading to the development of a hardground-phosphoritic bed on the outer shelf, and (c) the subsequent deposition of the Arnager Limestone, which began during the late early Coniacian, took place under outer-shelf conditions. These changes in depositional environment in the region of the Island of Bornholm provide evidence of a transgression during the late Cenomanian-early Coniacian interval.
