Abstract
A wide variety of acute and chronic liver diseases may progress to end stage liver disease (ESLD). The manifestations of ESLD are consistent, affecting every organ system. Although liver transplantation remains a curative therapeutic option for some patients, many will die waiting for a transplant, while others are not candidates for transplantation. Palliative medicine (PM) offers all of these patients relief from complications of ESLD and their associated symptoms, all of which impact the patient’s quality of life. This review details the pathophysiology and complications of ESLD, as well as palliative care options to relieve the associated symptoms.
