The educational plan includes a clinical experience and patient care assessment; self-study through the use of a resource information booklet; a take-home exam that surveys knowledge, self-confidence, and concerns; a small group workshop; and a self-reflection essay. Students were also asked to evaluate the experience after completion. This curriculum material has been in place for several years and is highly regarded by students as indicated by the number of requests for fourth-year one-month electives in palliative care. Educational Objectives By the end of this module, the learner will be able to: Understand the meaning of the clinical domain, palliative care, and its relationship with hospice and aggressive, cure-oriented care.Learn the five components of a palliative care assessment.Complete a knowledge examination of palliative care.Improve knowledge in cored domains of palliative care: pain and symptom management, communication skills, ethics, hospice, and goal setting.Understand your personal values surrounding care of the dying that impact upon decision-making.
