Abstract

Cancer survivorship is defined as occurring from the time of diagnosis until death. Therefore, palliative care is an essential component of cancer survivorship care. Patients with issues related to advanced cancer or cancer treatments have myriad problems affecting physical, psychosocial, and spiritual components of quality of life. These may lead to death or continued suffering for the cancer patient. The holistic care of cancer survivors mandates focus on these issues for cancer survivors and their families, caregivers, and support team. Palliative care principles should be implemented early in the cancer trajectory and continued throughout the cancer survivor’s life. Palliative surgical care, whether through an operation, conservative management, or communication of the benefits and limitations of surgical care, is an essential component for many cancer survivors.
