Abstract

There is a high percentage of patients with esophageal carcinoma in which functional parameters rule out major therapeutic interventions. Chronic heart or lung diseases aggravated by reduced nutritional status do not allow palliative measures, which are associated with considerable physical stress, such as resection, bypass, chemotherapy, or irradiation. We have applied a staged palliation schedule in such patients.
