Abstract

ism. Studies have demonstrated that while suicide terror is a proportionately uncommon form of terror, it causes a disproportionately high number of casualties. This is because the suicide bomber is the epitome of a smart bomb', a device uniquely able to select the precise time and place where it can inflict the most damage. Suicide terror also has a tremendous psychological affect on its target population and the greater world audience. The grotesque images of a blown-up bus or cafe leave an indelible impression in the minds of all those who bear witness to it, and inspire an unprecedented fear that such a deadly attack can occur anytime, anywhere. Furthermore, the knowledge that someone sacrificed their life for a given cause often invites an observer unfamiliar with the mentality of a suicide bomber to consider the legitimacy of the bomber s plight, no matter how irrational it is.
