Abstract

This chapter discusses different historical trajectories, which have challenged the Palestinian media under the Israeli occupation. It also identifies the main players and key outlets to examine the business models and competition between the main players. This chapter provides an overview of the types of regulatory bodies and contemporary regulatory environment which control the sector with its state media versus independent media balancing the government’s control versus the market rules and their impact on media censorship. The aim is to identify the relationship between the state and media and how the latter can be used as a propaganda tool. Finally, the chapter briefly examines the relationship between the audiences and media as spaces of free speech to assess whether the media contributes to social changes and development in the occupied Palestinian territories (OPT).
