Abstract

ABSTRACT Intertidal-supratidal couplets of the Yahatinda Formation were affected by pedogenic, meteoric and phreatic processes. These dolostone and terrigenous dolostone couplets represent paleosol chronosequences that show no systematic upward or downward change in paleosol maturity or thickness based on sedimentologic, pedologic, geochemical and isotopic evidence. In contrast to idealized sequence stratigraphic models, the thickest intertidal-supratidal couplet contains the most mature paleosols. Geochemical paleosol signatures appear to be less related to paleosol maturity than to high soil alkalinity, the amount of sediment delivered during pedogenesis and the effects of exposure to both meteoric and phreatic conditions during shallow burial. At the top of the section, shallow marine shales are capped by a brecciated calcrete-dolocrete hardpan that represent submarine and subaerial hiatuses, respectively. Based on estimates of modern hardpan development, a time constraint of 20-400 thousand years is placed on the unconformity at the top of the Yahatinda Formation. RESUME Les paires intertidales-supratidales de la Formation de Yahatinda ont subi des processus pedogeniques, meteoriques et phreatiques. Ces paires de dolomies et dolomies terrige repesentent des chronosequences de paleosols qui ne montrent pas de changement systematique vers le haut ou vers le bas de la maturite du paleosol ou de son epaisseur, en se basant sur les evidences sedimentologiques, pedologiques, geochimiques et isotopiques. En contraste avec les modeles idealises de stratigraphie sequentielle, la plus epaisse des paires intertidales-supratidales contient les paleosols les plus matures. Les signatures geochimiques des paleosols semblent moins reliees a la maturite du paleosol qu'a une forte alcalinite du sol, la quantite de sediment livree durant la pedogenese et aux effets de l'exposition a des conditions a la fois meteoriques et phreatiques durant l'enfouissement peu profond. Au sommet de la coupe, des shales marins d'environnement peu profond sont coiffes par un niveau concretionne brechique de gravier calcaire et dolomitique cimente qui representent respectivement des hiatus sous-marins et sub-aeriens. En se basant sur les estimations de developpement de niveaux concretionnes modernes, une contrainte de temps de 20 a 40 mille ans est fixe a la discordance sise au sommet de la Formation de Yahatinda.
