Abstract

This work is based on a lecture course the authors have led for many years. Its sources include the analysis of Ivane Javakhishvili's fundamental work, breadth of relevant published academic literature and digital publications. The paper analyzes the main theoretical issues of paleography. These include the origin of writing; types; epigraphy; papyrology; codicology; filigranology; theories of the origin of the Georgian alphabet; types of the Georgian alphabet; writing materials and tools; components of a Georgian manuscript and publishing technology, repositories and catalogs of manuscripts, the role of the literate class in the collection and preservation of Georgian manuscripts; marking; punctuation; signs of excommunication; secret writing; calligraphic art and more. The book is intended for undergraduate and Master's students of Georgian Philology and for a wide circle of readers interested in paleography.
