Abstract

The paper investigates the influence of palatalization on the temporal organization of CVC clusters. It was observed that the palatalization of prevocalic consonants increases the duration of vocalic intervals in CVC clusters if the vowel is [−front]. The palatalization of both consonants in CVC clusters decreases the duration of vocalic intervals if the vowel is [+front]. The palatalization of postvocalic consonants increases the duration of consonantal intervals in CVC clusters. The obtained results are interpreted in the light of physiological constraints on articulation that enhance the perceptual distinctiveness of phonological contrasts which involve palatalization.
