Abstract
Demographics has long been a major issue in considerations of sociocultural development. Generally speaking, the greater the spatial constraint on a population, the more significant the variable of population size. Consequently, knowledge of population growth curves is potentially of extreme importance for understanding the differences and similarities that developed between island societies. In this paper, I review and critique some recent models of population growth that have been put forth for leeward Hawaii, and then evaluate four hypotheses regarding population size and growth for that region.
