Abstract

Synthetic biology is an emerging field that is set to revolutionise the global life sciences and biotechnology landscape. There are several, often broad, ways of defining this new field, but one of the more popular definitions is provided by the UK Royal Academy of Engineering which defines it as an emerging field that ‘aims to design and engineer biologically based parts, novel devices and systems as well as redesigning existing, natural biological systems’ (The Royal Academy of Engineering: Synthetic biology: scope, applications and implications. https://www.raeng.org.uk/publications/reports/synthetic-biology-report, 2009).
