Abstract
Benazir Bhutto has completed two years as prime minister, during which Pakistan has continued to be embroiled in domestic political strife, an economic recession described by some economists as the worst in 30 years, international terrorism, and international flashpoints on both its eastern and western borders. The government elected in October 1993 is still in power although rumors abound regarding an impending change. The replacement of an independent president with one aligned with the People's Party of Pakistan (PPP) and the ability of the military to resist temptation to become directly involved in politics once again seems to preclude an early dismissal of the third elected government since 1988, but demands for a nonpartisan government along the lines of the 1993 caretaker government have intensified.
