Abstract

The list of possible superconducting states with odd parity for Sr 2 RuO 4 contains nonunitary phases. These phases have gapless quasi-particle excitations which could explain the large residual density of states observed experimentally in the superconducting phase. An energy analysis is performed, which shows that a special mechanism is needed in addition to weak coupling in order to stabilize the nonunitary phase. Various experiments which may provide additional information on the unusual properties of the superconducting phase are discussed.
