Abstract

Pair formation in 2 forms ofMacrophthalmus japonicus was observed where both occurred sympatrically. Both forms showed 2 types of sexual behavior leading to either (1) surface copulations or (2) entry into the male's burrow. In the latter, the 2 forms differed according to which sex entered the burrow first. In all observations, pair formations were confined to members of the same form. These results suggest that the 2 forms are reproductively isolated from one another.
