Abstract
Thespin- S Blume-Capel model is studied within the pair approximation and Monte Carlo simulations. Phase diagrams are obtained for general values of S. The results confirm the trend of mean-field-like approaches and are in disagreement with previous Monte Carlo simulations, renormalization group calculations, and conformal field theories.
