Abstract

Advanced carcinoma cervix, common in Indian subcontinent, needs EXRT followed by interstitial brachytherapy boost. Pain management in patients undergoing Interstitial Pelvic Brachytherapy (IPB) is a unique challenge as it involves placement of needles which remain in situ for a long duration (>30 hrs). It requires complete analgesia for insertion of needles & continuous analgesia throughout the period of brachytherapy. There is limited published literature on analgesic modalities for IPB. The objective of the study was to compare the efficacy, safety & immediate side effects of Patient controlled epidural analgesia with background infusion (group P) & Continuous epidural infusion (group C) using bupivacaine-fentanyl in patients undergoing IPB.
