Abstract

Although 78% of emergency department (ED) patients present with a pain-related complaint, few published studies address treating, rather than diagnosing, this complaint. This study correlated initial, discharge and post-discharge ED pain assessments, and examined ED pain management and potential treatment barriers. Objectives: To examine the correlation of patient, accompanying adult, nurse and physician pain assessments; determine the characteristics of patients presenting with pain; evaluate the effectiveness of ED pain intervention.
